The importance of destressing

According to the National Institute Of Mental Health, “continued strain on your body from routine stress may contribute to serious health problems, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other illnesses, as well as mental disorders like depression or anxiety.”

Don’t get me wrong, stress is a natural thing. It is even very useful an can help us perform better under certain circumstances.

However, when we are under extreme stress for long periods of time, it becomes very harmful.

Our body doesn’t differentiate between the stress caused by a lion that is treating our existence. And the modern-day challenges busy working women face like that of a presentation deadline, sales targets, angry customers, …

The physical importance of destressing

Our autonomic nervous system kicks in and a fight or flight response gets triggered. As our body prepares to react on perceived danger, our heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing rate increase, our muscles tense up, and we start sweating. At the same time, our digestion and immune system are put on a lower level to preserve energy.

Our body means well. And this response is very useful in actual life or death kind of situations. Unfortunately, for us busy babes, it is not healthy as a continued mental state of mind.

The mental importance of destressing

One of the chemicals being released in our brain when under stress is cortisol.

Cortisol in moderation is a part of the natural functioning of our bodies. However, the buildup of cortisol in our brain can have long-term effects.

According to the Dartmouth Undergraduate Journal of Science, cortisol plays a role in regulating blood sugar levels and has an impact on our hippocampus. This is the part of our brain where memories are stored and processed. Bring in the stress-induced brain fog ladies.

And I’m afraid that’s not it. Other studies have discovered chronic stress has a negative impact on brain function in multiple ways.

  • Stress can disrupt synapse regulation
With the loss of sociability and even the avoidance of interactions with others as a result.
  • Stress can actually kill brain cells
It even reduced the size of our brain. Jikes! I don’t know about you, but as a working woman, I kind of like the size of my brain. And I can use every single brain cell I have in there!
  • Stress makes your prefrontal cortex shrink
The prefrontal cortex is the area of the brain responsible for memory and learning. Two capabilities most of us busy babes appreciate and would hate to see go.
